Little Jade (age 2) seeks refuge in her mothers arms during an unusually hot 4th of July in Barrow. For every Independence Day celebration, a baby pageant called "Top of the World" is held. Local babies hit the runway with full traditional attire made of different furs, designed and hand stitched. Each piece that Jade is wear was confectioned by her mother. Given the high temperatures, keeping the kids wearing their heavy parkas was an ordeal. Having a 70 degree day in the Arctic is a rarity, even during the summer when temperatures average 42 degrees.
