During fall and winter, the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas begin to "freeze-up". The ice closest to the shore runs aground and becomes anchored there long after pack-ice moves out to sea during spring "break-up". By the time researchers arrive during the summer, this is their best hope of actualizing their common conception of an ice covered Arctic. The ice is returning to sea faster with summer sea-ice maximums at all-time lows.
