As the group of researchers and obvious outsiders I was with stood awkwardly at the Nalukataq celebration, we watched an older woman slice muktuk in thin strips. Muktuk is uncooked whale blubber and skin caught that season and frozen in underground cellars. After a few minutes, she looks at us and without saying a word gestures us over and happily fed us more muktuk than any of us could have handled. The taste is like nothing else. You either love it or hate it.
