4th of July celebrations are a big deal in Barrow, AK. This all day event boasts all the same events you might find at a 4th of July event in the Lower 48; gunny sack races, 2-foot hop, 5k marathon and the 3 legged race. However, the people of Barrow have put their own spin on the 4th. The event also features an Umiaq (small seal skin boat) race, Inupiat woman vs. white man tug-o-war, NRA sponsored gun raffle and the Top of the World Baby Contest seen in the photo. Babies and toddlers are dolled up in traditional, handmade Inupiat clothing and hit the tundra. Jade, seen here, is having a rough go at it seeing as this was a historically hot 4th of July (mid-70's).
