The tundra is a dynamic landscape. Winter freezing and summer thawing of the permafrost create this irregular pattern of thermokarsts (seen here in the picture). As water accumulates in these features, the enhanced warming properties of water further thaw the permafrost below leading to ever-larger thermokarsts. Researchers are particularly interested in this dynamic as it has implications in the increased release of greenhouse gases from the permafrost beneath.
